🌿Samidori Matcha: Why This Rare Japanese Cultivar Feels So Special

Midori Matcha Journal

If you have tried our Premium Uji Matcha – Samidori Cultivar, you may have noticed that it tastes a little different from many matcha powders available today.

Smoother, softer, naturally balanced — with a gentle sweetness and no bitterness.

But what exactly is Samidori, and why do tea lovers in Japan value it so highly?

What does “Samidori” mean?

In Japanese, Samidori (さみどり) is often translated as “early green” or “pure green”, a name that beautifully reflects its vibrant colour and early spring growth.

Samidori is one of Japan’s most respected tea cultivars and has long been associated with high-quality matcha from Uji, Kyoto, the historic birthplace of Japanese matcha.

Unlike more common tea varieties, Samidori is traditionally chosen for refined ceremonial teas because of its naturally smooth and elegant character.

What does Samidori matcha taste like?

Every cultivar has its own personality, much like grapes in wine or coffee origins.

Samidori is known for its:

🍃 Smooth, creamy texture
🍃 Gentle natural sweetness
🍃 Soft nutty undertones
🍃 Balanced umami with no bitterness

Rather than tasting sharp or overly grassy, Samidori often feels soft, rounded and refined — making it particularly enjoyable for traditional matcha preparation.

At Midori Matcha, our Premium Matcha or Focus Matcha (集中 Matcha) is crafted from single-cultivar Samidori, allowing the unique flavour of this special tea variety to shine through naturally.

Why “Focus Matcha” (集中 Matcha)?

On our label, we call our Premium Samidori matcha Focus Matcha.

The Japanese word 集中 (Shūchū) means focus, concentration or mental clarity.

This reflects the feeling many people associate with high-quality matcha: calm alertness rather than the sharp highs and crashes often linked to coffee.

Samidori is naturally rich in L-theanine, an amino acid that works together with caffeine to support a more balanced and sustained feeling of energy.

Many people describe matcha energy as:

calm, steady and focused — ideal for work, study, creative thinking or quiet morning rituals.

Health benefits of Samidori matcha

Like other authentic Japanese matcha, Samidori contains naturally occurring compounds that support wellbeing as part of a balanced lifestyle.

These include:

✔ L-theanine – associated with calm focus and mental clarity
✔ Catechins (including EGCG) – powerful antioxidants naturally present in green tea
✔ Chlorophyll – developed through the traditional shading process before harvest
✔ Natural caffeine – for smoother, longer-lasting energy

Because matcha is made from finely ground tea leaves, you consume the whole leaf rather than simply infusing it, meaning you enjoy more of the tea’s naturally occurring nutrients.

How is Samidori cultivated?

Producing high-quality Samidori matcha requires patience and care.

Before harvest, the tea plants are carefully shade-grown, reducing direct sunlight for several weeks. This traditional method encourages deeper colour, richer umami and higher levels of L-theanine.

The youngest spring leaves are then harvested and processed into tencha — the special tea leaf used to make matcha — before being slowly ground into fine powder.

At Midori Matcha, our Samidori comes from a single family-run farm in Uji, cultivated by a fourth-generation tea master using careful, pesticide-free growing practices and traditional expertise passed down over decades.

Why we chose Samidori

At Midori Matcha, we wanted our premium matcha to feel truly special — not simply “more expensive,” but genuinely different.

Samidori stood out for its beautiful balance, smooth character and naturally elegant flavour.

For us, it represents everything we love about authentic Japanese matcha:

craftsmanship, transparency, calm focus and quiet quality.
